when a woman cooks / cooking stories in Peace Corps Benin

Writer: leannv88leannv88

I was in my house on a nice wednesday afternoon. My neighbor kids were all present. Deo, Narcisse, Benoit, Rosine, Diane and Gael. Charlie was at my place and we were feeling a little snacky. I decided to make some pancakes with the new dehydrated fruits that I got from America.

The two girls Diane and Rosine came to me in the kitchen. I was a little sad that the girls are the ones who always follow me to the kitchen but they said something that made me smile. Rosine asked me if them coming back to cook with me bothers me. I said no its fine. She said, because here if a woman cooks something new the girls observe and learn. I was happy that the girls were interested in learning from me. Especially because I am cooking an american food that they haven't had before!

We prepared the pancakes the emma way which means flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, water and oil go into a cup we stir and we cook! We added chocolate chips and fruit on once it started cooking. Diane was trying to flip the pancakes but we almost lost a few and Rosine was telling her how it was done. I was trying not to laugh at these two girls battling it out over the pancakes. We had to feed the guests first as Rosine told me. She said "If you go to Charlies house he cooks right? So you have to feed him now."

I reluctantly gave the first 3 pancakes to Charlie and laughed as we hear the neighbor boys complain.

As we made more and more pancakes finally everyone got to eat, one kid didnt like them, which I dont understand how its just sweet bread basically. I added peanut butter (my liquid gold in Benin) to the batches I split with the girls. IT was delicious and really fun!

I like hanging out with my neighbors and as I am surrounded almost completely with boys having a cooking day with the girls is a nice break from the chaos!

I also had another student over who has made a delicious food before and I wanted to know how it was made. It is called Goosi (not sure how to spell it) and is basically vegitarian meatballs. You take the seed of some plant and turn it to flour, then mix with an egg, seasonings, water and tomato paste and make a delicious sauce to boil it in. It was amazing and I was able to enjoy it with Charlie. I hope to recreate something like it as well.
