🇹🇼 From Midwest USA to West Africa to the "Silicon Valley of Taiwan": My Journey at TSE NTHU

Hello everyone! Just Emma, your local world traveler, checking in.
It’s been a whirlwind transition. Moving from the life of a Peace Corps volunteer in Benin to a high-intensity Master’s in Asian Political Economy here in Taiwan was a major shift. I’ll admit, I spent the first semester just trying to get my "student legs" back under me after being away from academia. But now that I’m in my second semester at the Taipei School of Economics and Political Science (TSE), I think ive started to find my stride.
🎓 The Program: Asian Political Economy in English
If you’ve ever considered grad school abroad but were worried about the language barrier or the cost, Taiwan is a hidden gem.
100% English-Taught: My entire Master’s is in English, making the transition seamless for international students.
Scholarships: One of the best parts about studying at TSE is the generous scholarship opportunities available for international applicants. It makes a world-class education incredibly accessible.
⛰️ Other things to do not Study:
When I’m not at NTHU, I’m out exploring. With the almost 3 month winter break and great weather I was able to see a lot more and relax before the next semester.
Northern Peaks & Springs: Hiking the volcanic trails of Yangmingshan in Taipei is surreal. The sulfur hot springs are a bit stinky but also feel very nice. The view of the city are great.
Awesome Cafes: I have been to a cat cafe, dog cafe, book cafe, and bug cafe, plus some just amazing coffee joints because thats where I force myself to work when peiple are looking at me.
Taiwan gets swealtering hot but Charlie and I found a waterfall, there’s nothing better than the Beitou cold springs to reset.
The Cedar Forests: Climbing Jialishan in Miaoli felt like stepping into a fantasy book—walking through ancient cedar forests and standing above a sea of clouds.
Southern Vibes: A trip down to Kaohsiung isn't complete without the ferry to Cijin Island. The houses were pastel colors and the smell of street market meats and sweets was divine. We also watched the sunset on top of the old fort overseeing the ocean.
